NG-RES workshop CFP

The Workshop on Next Generation Real-Time Embedded Systems (NG-RES) workshop focuses on real-time embedded systems, with particular emphasis on the distributed and parallel aspects. The workshop is a venue for both the networking and multicore real-time communities aiming at cross-fertilization and multi-disciplinary approaches to the design of embedded systems.

The workshop is co-located with HiPEAC 2020 on January 21, 2020 – Bologna, Italy.

Talk “Energy Aware Scheduling for multi-core mobile platforms: the Arm experience”

Patrick Bellasi, Staff Software Engineer working for Arm Ltd (Cambridge), on Thursday 19th of April at 3:00 pm, DEIB Conference Room “Emillio Gatti” (Building 20, ground floor), will be talking about the main challenges, related to power and performance optimization of Linux/Android mobile devices.

Here below is the abstract.

The power/performance response of mobile device is among the key factors to determine the commercial success of products such as modern high end smartphones. Since the introduction of the big.LITTLE architecture, Arm Ltd has been in the frontline to propose architectural solutions which allow partners to compete on the market with products which give great performance without compromising battery life. Despite advanced architectural solutions, the best results cannot be achieved without a properly designed software support spanning all the stack, from a rich Operating System like Linux all the way up to advanced run-times like Android and ChromeOS.

Since few years, the Arm’s Power Team is working with the open source community to enhance the general purpose Linux scheduler to more efficiently map tasks onto compute elements, running them at the appropriate voltage and frequency, so as to minimise energy consumption whilst ensuring that UI deadlines are met. This talk will give an overall view on the main challenges, related to power and performance optimization of Linux/Android mobile devices. The main components of the Energy Aware Linux scheduler will be introduced as well as the integration with the Android run-time.

The presentation will also briefly introduce the company and will provide pointers to few internship and job positions available for candidates interested in working in Arm.

Talk “Research Intelligence and SciVal”

Luigi Rucco, Customer Consultant for Elsevier’s Research Management Solutions in the area of Southern Europe, France and Israel, on Tuesday 27th of March at 3:00 pm will be talking about the state of the art in Research Management and Research Intelligence solutions through a practical view on the use of SciVal and Scopus.

Today’s R&D landscape requires research managers to devise better ways to measure the quality and impact of their institution’s research projects. This need extends to researchers and young researchers, so that they can better position themselves in their scientific landscape, by constantly monitoring their performance and aiming for continuous improvement. Using advanced data analytics super-computer technology, Elsevier’s SciVal Solution, currently available at Politecnico di Milano, allows researchers to instantly process an enormous amount of data to generate powerful analyses and visualizations on-demand, in seconds. The talk is an opportunity to discuss the state of the art in Research Management and Research Intelligence solutions, as well as to have a practical view on the use of SciVal and Scopus.
