European Space Agency co-funds a HEAP Lab research project on Spacecraft Computers

Federico Reghenzani, post-doc at HEAP Lab, proposed the three-year research project “Mixed-Criticality Fault-Tolerant Systems for the Future Generation of Spacecraft Computers”, which has been selected by the Open Space Innovation Platform (OSIP) programme of the European Space Agency (ESA). The project, co-funded by ESA and DEIB’s HEAP Lab, will be developed by Federico under the supervision of Prof. William Fornaciari.

The project goal is to investigate how to integrate several real-time applications, with multiple criticalities, on a single computing platform. The scientific challenges include the mixed-criticality schedulability analysis of the real-time tasks and the necessity to guarantee high resilience to faults, a significant problem present in the extreme environmental conditions of space.

The presence in this project of both the university component with DEIB and the final user represented by ESA makes possible, on the one hand, the investigation of novel academic solutions, and, on the other hand, the access to ESA ESTEC laboratories to validate the project outputs on real space-graded hardware and software.

HEAP Lab Team wins the “Switch to Product Innovation Challenge 2019”!

The project “LAMP – Application Specific Modular Processor”, leaded by Dr. Davide Zoni, is one of the winners of the 2019 Switch to Product Innovation Challenge organised by Politecnico di Milano, Deloitte and PoliHub.

The focus of the project is on a joint security and power optimisation of IoT devices. The LAMP team is composed by Davide Zoni, Andrea Galimberti, Giovanni Scotti and William Fornaciari. The final presentation event took place on December 11 th , 2019.

TAFFO, the Tuning Assistant for Floating point to Fixed point Optimization that has been developed by the team led by our own Dr. Stefano Cherubin, has finally been released!

TAFFO is intended as a tool to help programmers exploit fixed point computation in their code.

You can download it and compile it from our official repository. You can use it with the LLVM compiler toolchain.

Federico Reghenzani wins HiPEAC Collaboration Grant

Congratulations to our final year PhD student Federico Reghenzani who won an HiPEAC Collaboration Grant (5000euro) to work with Prof. Zhishan Guo at the University of Central Florida (Orlando, US).

Between mid October and mid January, Federico will work in Prof. Guo’s Real-Time & Intelligent Systems Lab to deepen his knowledge on Probabilistic Mixed-Criticality Systems.

What is an HiPEAC Collaboration Grant?

Every year, HiPEAC funds several collaboration grants for HiPEAC PhD students and junior post-doctoral researchers wanting to visit another HiPEAC institution (either an academic institution or a company). The students and their host prepare a small research project for the stay (hence the topic is defined by the students and their hosts). The steering committee decides on the final allocation of the collaboration grants – based on the quality of the proposals.

NG-RES workshop CFP

The Workshop on Next Generation Real-Time Embedded Systems (NG-RES) workshop focuses on real-time embedded systems, with particular emphasis on the distributed and parallel aspects. The workshop is a venue for both the networking and multicore real-time communities aiming at cross-fertilization and multi-disciplinary approaches to the design of embedded systems.

The workshop is co-located with HiPEAC 2020 on January 21, 2020 – Bologna, Italy.
